The city of Delft deserves its fame abroad in Holland for two reasons. On the one hand, its renowned porcelain decoration inspired by Chinese porcelain that came here centuries ago by the activity of the Company of the West Indies. And another of the painter Vermeer, known as Vermeer of Delft, one of the leading representatives of baroque art of the Netherlands during the seventeenth century.
Vermeer was born in 1632 in Delft, in the same city who died in 1675. Throughout his short life, barely 43 years, he painted many pictures, and hopefully performed twice a year. Instead, he had time to have 15 children, although some died as infants.
Perhaps, some not able to recognize his paintings and identify its author. And yet his work is much closer I saw her and immediately if you see pictures like The Seamstress or painter’s workshop you will sound. Not to mention two of his most famous works: the first exhibited at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is the milk, the image of a famous brand of yogurt or Girl with a pearl, beautifully played by the stunning Scarlett Johansson in the film of the same title and inspired by the life and work of Vermeer.
But besides those paintings folkloric character, Vermeer also portrayed his town on several occasions, of which his most successful is View of Delft, where you can see the Schie river channels forming the city, the ancient walls and the tower of the New Church of the population.
