If something is world famous Dutch city of Assen is the race track which hosts the World Championship Tour Motorcycle. This annual event on the bikes is one of the most special, so much so that it is the only one that takes place on Saturday and the circuit is known in the biker scene as the Cathedral, because the show takes place here in each of the major awards.
And therein lies the paradox of Assen, it would seem that the city would have to be fully identified with the world of speed and engine. However, if you arrive to Assen best thing to do is park the car and visit the place by bike, something that otherwise is not uncommon in the Netherlands.
You will not have problem to park your car as you will find a good infrastructure for it around the city center. And besides, Assen go on a bike is perfectly acceptable to most people, because the small size of the population means that there are no extraordinary lengths to go.
On the other hand, in the inner city you will see that almost everyone on bike, the streets are ready for traffic on pedals and car drivers will respect at all times.
To get an idea of the close relationship between the bicycle and Assen, just look at the schedule of the Tour of Spain in 2010. If you recall, it is found that surprisingly the Tour began in Assen, the capital of the region of Drenthe in the Netherlands.
