Did you know that the Carnival of Cadiz is one of the most famous Carnival celebrations in the world? Everyone wants to participate in this great Spanish party, so intense and fun as Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.
Located on the coast of Andalusia, Cadiz City is known for its tranquility. However, this serenity is transformed into music, dance, joy, colors and costumes, when the carnival season approaches. Thousands of people choose to sleep on the streets – or stay up all night – not to miss a minute of that special energy that pervades the city.
In this Carnaval of Cadiz 2011, that energy will be present as for hundreds of years, in the seventeenth century, where this tradition came to this part of Spain. At that time, the idea was to keep up with the celebration of Carnival of Venice and Genoa, and so was the Spanish galleons that brought – along with gold and silver – a large repertoire of musical influences, like African and Creole rhythms, sambas and rustic melodies.
Cadiz Carnival today has its own identity. The preparation does not last more than a couple of days, but the results are spectacular. Cadiz streets are filled with parades of people in costume, carnival groups (for example, jokes), musical events, night ‘s timetable, adults and children dancing, beauty pageants and even rock concerts of the most popular Spain in the Plaza de la Catedral. To conclude, the day was rounded off by a fireworks display.
Will not you join this party? This may be the year 2011! Cadiz Carnival 2011 will take place during the first days of March.
